WOF-2337: Rare 1819 Normandy Armoire:
An important & rare dated 1819 Normandy armoire; the finest we have ever encountered. The depth of carving, intricacy of design, and historic door portraits of the owner and his chateau are simply exceptional. Every neo-classical motif is employed in this masterpiece, carved of oak and of rich warm color. While the basket of flowers is remarkable, the central door panels are the true fascination. Before a stately 18th century neo-classical chateau from the reign of Louis XVI, the owner symbolically plows with a double horse drawn gun carriage converted to a plow (swords to plowshares). In the half medallion below the scene is the medallions of the French Legion of Honor, created by the Emperor Napoleon in 1802. Dated 1819, this piece was completed during the short reign of King Louis XVIII and the restoration of the monarchy. In the design elements are 18th century motifs along with early 19th century classical period motifs. 53" w., 22" d., 94 3/4" h. $12,000
