A pair of portraits, c.1650, believed to be Hannah Ayscough Newton and her wealthy second husband, the Reverend Barnabas Smythe. She was the mother of Sir Isaac Newton whose father died 3 months before his birth. She abandoned him at age 3 to marry Smythe, reclaiming him at age 12 after Smythe died. A fascinating history, whether or not true! 33" x 28" framed. $2,400

"Brushstroke", Robert Motherwell, 1980 one-color lithograph, 31 1/2" x 16". Arches cover paper, 31 of 49, purchased by Paul and Dorothy Ferster from Severtson and Assoc. Ltd., New Haven, CT. Robert Motherwell (American, 1915-1991) was one of the youngest of the New York School (The Abstract Expressionists), a painter, printmaker and editor of immense importance. "Bessie" watercolor & gouache on paper, signed lower right and dated: Ward Binks, '36. Reuben Ward Binks, England, 1880-1950. One of England's most prominent animal painters, William Secord noted: the artist's client list was a 'Who's Who' of the purebred dog world". Bessie belonged to Bettine Field, daughter of Marshall Field and bequeathed to her dear friend Wayne Goodall. Binks painted the hunting dogs of many members of the Royal Family; his portraits hang throughout Sandringham. Frame: 19 1/2" x 23 1/8". Sight: 11 1/2" x 15 1/4". $2,250
