Circa 1870s painting “S. Georgio Maggiore & the Dogano” by Jane Vivian in gilt frame. Title inscribed on canvas en verso. Signed J. Vivian lower right, British, flourished 1869-1890. She was an immensely successful lanscape painter with a specialty of Venetian scenes. Her identity & career are fascinating. This is likely a pseudonym, possibly for a daughter of the famed artist James Edwin Meadows – or it is possibly James himself (1828-1893). Jane’s address coincides with the Meadows family, even through several moves! The painting is the original canvas in period, presumably original frame (frame with minor losses commensurate with age). There are two small patches on reverse. It was likely cleaned by DuBose Gallery, Houston, TX (phone JA 6-2353 at 2950 Kirby Dr as noted en verso). Canvas: 20″ x 31″. Being sold to benefit the charitable outreach of The Chapel of the Cross, Chapel Hill, NC.
Framed: 35″ x 46.75″ x 4″.
