Derived from canopies for processions, the term has come to signify all such coverings, most famously the Bernini high alter baldachin of St. Peter’s, Rome. Handcarved of walnut and chestnut, this canopy is supported by fluted columns, all crowned with Gothic Revival spires and a gold leafed Celtic cross (possibly Brittany with this touch and the native woods). 54″ h., 22″ x 22″.
