Late 19th century watercolor by F.J. Aldridge “The Double Locks, Exeter Canal”. Frederick James Aldridge, 1850-1938. Signed lower right “F.J. Aldridge”. A 3-masted ship is tied up, as is a fishing boat, before transitioning locks. Although Aldridge was a popular artist in his lifetime, he slipped into obscurity. By the 1980s, he was once again sought by collectors. Superb example of his best works. Accompanied by newspaper article, bill for cleaning, etc. Provenance: Dr. John Fryer Collection, Exeter, London & Chapel Hill via Bearnes Auctions, Torquay & J. Collins & Son, 1988. Sight: 14″ x 21″.
